I am thrilled to see and hear migratory birds moving through south Florida. Maybe there will be an end to this winter after all, eh?
This afternoon I was treated to these Painted Buntings at our backyard feeder. These birds spend winter in south Florida. We're right on the edge of southern and central, so they may be just beginning their trip north.
The brighter bird with all the color variations is male, and the green/gray is female.
These beautiful colors have us all thinking spring!
INTERESTING FACTS
- The Painted Bunting is one of the most brilliantly colored and visually striking birds in all of the United States. It is the only bird in the U.S. to have a blue head and red underparts.
- The USGS recorded a 60% decline in population from coastal Georgia between 1966 and 1995. Decline has been attributed to loss of breeding habitat due to urban development, increased nest parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds and several problems attributed to climate change.

Beautiful birds and fantastic photos!! I guess that feeder in your backyard is paying off. How nice that they came to visit you:) The photo in my header was taken at Mounts Botanical Gardens in West Palm Beach. Whenever I feel the need to see beauty, I find myself going back there.
